Brazil star Dani Alves faces a race against time to be fit for the World Cup after his club Paris Saint-Germain said he would be out for at least three weeks with a knee injury.

A player who really captures the excitement, flair, skill and beauty of the game that the Brazilian team brings, the 35-year-old picked up the injury with Paris Saint-Germain at the weekend in the French Cup final against Les Herbiers.

"The technical team of the Brazilian National Team wishes Daniel Alves a prompt recovery so that his technique and leadership is back for the Amarelinha as soon as possible".

He has provided five goals and seven assists in all competitions during his first season with Les Parisiens. Alves played for Brazil in the last two World Cups and has 107 appearances for the team since his 2006 debut.

"We will not miss only Dani as a player".

Alves limped off near the end of his side's 2-0 victory over the third-tier side and there were fears the full back might miss this summer's showpiece tournament, which kicks off on June 14. "But he told us to take some positive energy, he doesn't want people to be upset for him".

Former Brazil player Junior believed Danilo was the most likely replacement.

Brazil will announce its squad on Monday in Rio de Janeiro.

The players are due to report for training in Brazil on May 21, with pre-tournament Brasil Global Tour friendlies against Croatia and Austria set for June 3 and June 10 respectively.
