Nintendo And Illumination Planning Mario Animated Film

The film would be distributed by Universal Pictures, President Tatsumi Kimishima said at a meeting with analysts on son Thursday.

To make it happen, Nintendo is working with Illumination, the U.S. studio behind the "Despicable Me" and "Minions" movies. Chris Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto will be the co-producers of the movie. The Kyoto-based company made the announcement through a press release the day after its third-quarter financial results, and Nintendo of America later confirmed the exciting news on Twitter on Wednesday evening. The games have since been developed by a variety of developers including Nintendo, Hudson Soft, and AlphaDream.

Mario and Luigi will soon be headed to a theater near you, according to an announcement from Nintendo.

Other video game adaptations are headed to theaters, especially with the reboot of Tomb Raider to be released in March. The image of Mario you see in the tweet above is a pretty standard stock image that we see frequently for advertisements.

The move comes at a time when the video game giant is attempting to position itself as more than just about video games and consoles, but rather as an entertainment company.

Mario is heading back to the big screen and this time with some big help, Nintendo has officially confirmed.

Nintendo also originated the 1993 Super Mario Bros movie. Nintendo meanwhile has built several public facilities based on the two Mario Brothers characters.

Nintendo brought the world the FamiCom game machine in the 1980s and has had its up and downs as people's entertainment tastes changed.
