Everton beat Huddersfield 2-0 in Allardyce's first game — RECAP

Here's what we learned from the Goodison Park encounter. Huddersfield, seeking their second away win of the season and their first victory at Everton for 80 years, nearly took the lead when Tom Ince's curled corner led to chaos in Everton's box before Laurent Depoitre was thwarted by Jordan Pickford. It was chalk and cheese. Why?

And they ultimately wrapped up all three points 17 minutes from the end through the lively Calvert-Lewin, giving Allardyce a solid start to life on Merseyside. Another reminder of these unusual times.

It meant the stand-in captain and youthful centre-forward were involved in both goals. The effort from the players in the second half, they really wanted to win it after finding it difficult in the first half, maybe with a bit of fatigue.

Just over a week from now, Everton play Jurgen Klopp's high-energy Liverpool side. He ignored those shivering behind the steel railings waiting patiently for autographs because anger was present in the crowd.

Right-back: Tommy Smith - The Captain was strong against Manchester City, but one of a number of players dropped to comply with David Wagner's rotation policy.

As far as auditions go, this could have gone much better. He is likely to keep Everton up and it probably will not be pretty.

There was no case of 'after the Lord Mayor's show' for Wayne Rooney.

No permanent Everton manager has lost their first Premier League match in charge. For better or worse, this is the new reality, as Allardyce becomes the third occupant of the Everton dugout in the past five weeks while preparing for the visit of Huddersfield on Saturday.

"With Wednesday under our belts in David (Unsworth)'s last game, I watched that and the lads have come in and done the job today".

A standing ovation again met Rooney's substitution, as Goodison recognised his display. He and Everton have the feel of a marriage of convenience. Does Rooney, for example, have the positional discipline to repel the likes of Mané and Salah next Sunday? The owner is Farhad Moshiri.

They have now kept a two clean sheets in a row and have won back-to-back Premier League matches for the first time this season.

They have scored nine league goals this season - only bottom-two teams Crystal Palace and Swansea have fared worse in front of goal. "In possession, particularly in the first half, was a surprise".

"I'm disappointed about the game".

Allardyce, 63, signed an 18-month deal on Thursday and marked his return to the dug-out after a six-month break with victory thanks to second-half goals from Gylfi Sigurdsson and Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Viewed as something of a relegation messiah, swooping in to rescue the doomed from the precipice, Allardyce saved Crystal Palace last season.

If anything, it encouraged an improvement from Huddersfield, who suddenly started to enjoy some command.
